Temple Israel Mission Statement: Temple Israel dedicates itself to fostering Jewish spirituality in individual family and community life by embracing tradition, ritual, social consciousness, and ethics through excellence in leadership, education, and programming. |
We cherish the warm and caring people who make our congregation such a unique and close "family of families." This sense of Mishpacha pervades our services, our school, our study programs and our many special activities. We extend our hands in welcome and invite you to share our warmth and friendship. Our hope is that by becoming a part of our synagogue community, your life will be enriched.
We look forward to providing you with information about our Temple, our staff and our programs in the near future. If you have items you would like to see here, or have questions for us, feel free to email us at info@tilb.org
Temple Israel will celebrate Cantor Marvin Finnley’s 25 years of service at a special Shabbat on May 9 at 7:30 pm. The evening will begin with dinner at 6 pm. “The service will feature a musical tribute by the Ensemble,” said event chair Kendra Cogert. “Cantor Finnley built the Ensemble. It is so impressive that he is both a beautiful soloist and a skilled choral director.”
In his “day job,” Cantor Finnley is the Information Systems and Services Manager for the GM Advanced Technology Center in Torrance. “I have to sort of ‘shift gears’ after coming home to prepare for Shabbat services. I also spend a lot of time practicing, preparing for choir rehearsals, and planning the music for choir Shabbats,” said Finnley.
He enjoys “being able to create music out of air, being able, through music, to help make Shabbat more special than the ordinary days of the week. One of my happiest moments was when I was able to be present both as father and as cantor at the Bar Mitzvah of my son, Zev.”
Before coming to Temple Israel, Cantor Finnley studied with the music director and retired cantor of Temple Sinai in Washington D.C., where he was the Cantorial Soloist. About the upcoming celebration Cantor Finnley said, “It is honor enough to have been allowed to be the cantor of this great temple for all these years.”
Rabbi Steven Moskowitz said, “Marvin has a beautiful voice. He is an extraordinarily gifted choral director. Temple Israel has regularly enjoyed some of the most uplifting music from its Ensemble and from its High Holy Days Choir.”
Temple president Mark Levinstein agreed. “Marvin’s presence and voice add a wondrous dimension to our worship.”
