From the Borscht Belt to Brooklyn to the comedy clubs of LA, from Milton Berle to Sarah Silverman, Jewish comics have been holding up a mirror to society—and making us laugh at what we see. At its best, comedy serves as modern social theory—explaining why the world feels like such a mess and why we humans act in such beautifully ridiculous ways. And in times like these, when everything feels upside down, we need that perspective more than ever.
