Movie Discussion: Hester Street

  • Date: Saturday, October 22, 2022
  • Time: 7:00pm8:30pm

We begin our journey through a century (or so) of American Jewish life with a story familiar to many American Jews: emigrating from Europe to the United States. Hester Street takes place in 1896 New York. The film follows Russian Jew Yankel Bogovnik and his relatively easy assimilation into American culture, in contrast with the more difficult transition his wife Gitl and son Yossele face. Carol Kane was nominated for an Oscar for her portrayal of Gitl.

We’ll be looking at four films this year that represent several aspects of what it means to be Jewish in America during the past 100+ years. Please watch the film ahead of time and come to the program ready to join in the conversation.
