Movie Discussion: Brighton Beach Memoirs

Taking place in 1937 during The Great Depression and on the eve of WWII, Neil Simon’s semi-autobiographical tale strikes a chord for many Jewish families. Eugene Jerome, a young teen living in Brooklyn has to balance the relationships between his nuclear family and the extended family that has just joined them in their tiny apartment with his love of baseball and the pressures of adolescence. Events in Europe place additional pressures on the family as they worry what will become of relatives still in Poland.

We’ll be looking at four films this year that represent several aspects of what it means to be Jewish in America during the past 100+ years. Please watch the film ahead of time and come to the program ready to join in the conversation.
