A Taste of Yiddish Humor

  • Date: Thursday, October 30, 2025
  • Time: 7:00pm8:00pm

Teacher: Joe Bennish

What’s a shlimazl and what’s a shlemiel and what’s the difference? If you know, that’s great. If you don’t, if you are Yiddish challenged, not a problem. Learn Yiddish expressions, jokes, aphorisms, proverbs, and curses. It says a lot that Yiddish is a language in which the word for joke is also the word for wisdom (khokhme, a word which comes from Hebrew). No class on Yiddish humor would be complete without mentioning Sholom Aleichem, universally acknowledged as the greatest Yiddish humorist, and his three most memorable characters: Tevye the dairyman, Motl the cantor’s son, and Menachem Mendel, the irrepressible shlemiel.
