There is no doubt that 2011-2012 will be one of great adventure for Temple Israel. Our Congregation will spend the year in the “diaspora,” as our beloved building at Third and Loma undergoes its major remodel. Without a true home to call ours, we will gather in temporary spaces for the coming 12 months. Some may feel disconnected or even lost during this very unique year ahead.

It is our hope however that the Temple Israel Joys of Jewish Learning program will play an important role in keeping our congregants feeling connected and still very much a part of our congregational community. We will continue to offer many adult education classes this year, and we hope that you will take advantage of the diverse learning opportunities and chance to regularly see and connect with one another.

Classes will be offered in various locations throughout the year including our temporary administrative office, the AJCC, Westerly School (home of our Torah Center), and congregants’ homes. We are very grateful to the many Temple Israel members who have volunteered their homes to host our JJL classes. We anticipate that being in one another’s homes, which will all be fully accessible, will further the feeling of connectedness and warmth amongst our congregational family.

The Joys of Jewish Learning Committee has worked hard to create an interesting series of classes and programs for you to enjoy. We are particularly looking forward to welcoming Chef and Cookbook Author Tina Wasserman, author of Entrée to Judaism, in March. Her love of Jewish cooking is sure to warm our hearts. In addition, we will continue our well-received Temple Israel Reads One Book program this year. Be sure to pick up a copy of Devotion: A Memoir, by Dani Shapiro – a fascinating look into a journey of family dynamics and spirituality.

We will also be offering a new Coffee & Current Events series, a Jewish Parenting series, various film screenings and discussions, and several classes focused on Judaism and food. Additionally, we are happy to once again provide opportunities for Hebrew learning, holiday observance, and classes about the beauty and wisdom of our tradition. Enjoy this Joys of Jewish Learning Catalog of Courses and then mark your calendars for the educational programs that are of interest to you and your family.
